HTML editors

There are several specialized editors for HTML now available. Some of them have the same basic range of features you would expect to find in word-processing software: spelling checkers, thesauruses, search and replace capacities, and so on. In addition, many editors incorporate such features as links to browser programs to enable previewing of Web documents from within the editor, automatic checking and fixing of HTML syntax, easier insertion and maintenance of URLs and methods of guiding the user in the correct use of markup directives. There don't seem to be any editors around that include very much by way of data format conversion software, but there are editors with the facility to add such existing programs to their internal menus, thus bringing more tools `under one roof'.

It is quite possible to write perfectly good HTML without recourse to a specialized HTML editor. Any ordinary text editor is adequate for the task, but if a non-specialist editor is used, a much more detailed knowledge of HTML on the part of the user will be required. For someone in a hurry, a specialized editor would provide a faster route. Whichever editor is chosen, it is always possible to grab the HTML of an existing document from your browser and edit the content to suit your own requirements.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
