A system for describing the logical structure of text

The logical structure of text is described using a markup language, HTML (the Hypertext Markup Language). HTML defines the logical components of a document and is described in Part gif of the book.

The Web uses common networking concepts, such as client-server architecture. Each Web site runs a server program that responds to requests for information resources from browser programs, the clients in this model. Each request and its corresponding response forms a discrete transaction. Browsers may make requests to different servers depending on the links followed by the user. The servers do not keep track of the origin of requests, and regard each request as a completely new one even if it comes from the same browser.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
