User expectations

The Internet has a long history and has evolved a distinctive culture. It is customary to provide information in certain forms. Depending on the type of document being distributed, users might reasonably expect to see versions of the same document in different formats, perhaps suitable for printing, and using various compression methods. Some common formats of documents distributed on the Web are: plain text files, HTML, TeX, PostScript, Microsoft Word. Also, the following compression methods are often used: UNIX compress, GNU gzip, ZIP files.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
