Easy access to a global information service

The Web provides cheap and simple access to a fast-growing, global information service, for both providers and consumers of information. Most people, even those with little experience of or affection for computers, find using a Web browser straightforward and unintimidating. The Web has been described as making the technology invisible - it allows users to concentrate on the content of information, without having to think much about how to access it. Web browsers are easy to install and are beginning to be packaged as a standard component of some operating systems, a trend which is adding significantly to the pool of potential Web users. Setting up and running a server is only slightly more difficult than installing a browser, and much server software is readily available on the Net.

The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
