Front-end to existing systems

Deciding to use the Web within an organization does not necessarily involve deciding to `go public'. It may be used internally to provide an easily accessible front-end to a private information system with no outside connections. Applications might include help systems, access to procedure manuals and interfaces to existing software such as database systems. Running an internal server can be a useful way of evaluating whether the Web might be appropriate for your organization in a wider context. Multiple internal and external Web servers may be run simultaneously, thus giving finer control over access to sensitive information.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
