Images

A number of attributes have been defined for the IMG tag as well as further values for the ALIGN attribute. This attribute can now take the following values:

TOP
Align the top of the image with the top of the tallest item on the line.

TEXTTOP
Align the top of the image with the top of the tallest text item on the line (new).

MIDDLE
Align the centre of the image with the baseline of the line.

ABSMIDDLE
Align the centre of image with of the current line (new).

BOTTOM
Align the bottom of the image with the baseline of the current line.

BASELINE
A synonym for BOTTOM (new).

ABSBOTTOM
Align the bottom of the image with the bottom of the current line (new).

Additionally images can be defined as floating with the ALIGN="LEFT" and ALIGN="RIGHT", which aligns the image with the left and right margins respectively.

The WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes can be used to specify the dimensions of an image in pixels, so that a browser can allow space for the image before downloading it. This can speed up the display of a document, although there is no guarantee that the image is the size specified by these attributes.

The BORDER attribute controls the thickness of the border drawn around an image. The value can be set to zero, but this is probably not a good idea for images which form part of anchors, which conventionally are always contained within a border.

The attributes VSPACE and HSPACE have been added to allow vertical and horizontal space to be left around a floating image.

The CLEAR attribute has been added to the BR element so that line breaks will also take account of floating images. CLEAR="left" will break the line and then move down until the left margin is clear of floating images. CLEAR can also take the values right and all, which breaks the line and moves down until both margins are clear of floating images.
