Typographical conventions

The following typographical conventions are used in the online version of this book:

Italics
Used for the names of files, directories, commands and programs.
Typewriter Font
Used for examples, URLs and text that should be entered literally.
Typewriter Italics
Used for meta-variables.
Bold
Used for new terms where they are defined.

Square brackets are used to indicate that an item or syntactical component is optional.
