The GN server

The GN server is a multi-protocol server that runs under UNIX, written by John Franks at the Northwestern University. It differs from other Web servers in that not only can it serve Gopher as well as HTTP requests, but it embodies a fundamentally different approach to configuration and security. Only documents that are explicitly specified will be served. The current version is 2.17 and it is available at no cost under the GNU copyright. The GN server supports the following features:

  • Can be run from inetd or standalone.

  • Mapping of URLs to files and scripts.

  • Configurable typing of resources.

  • Access authorization mechanism.

  • Serves Gopher requests.

    WAIS!index searching (GN)

  • A version of GN can be built that includes WAIS searching capabilities.

The GN distribution includes extensive documentation and there is also a Frequently Asked Question list (FAQ) available on the Web, containing useful information.
