Mapping URLs to files

The URL hierarchy that the Web server presents may not match the file system structure that the organization wants to use. Some servers support aliases and redirection rules to map URLs to different file names. An alias is used to map a set of URLs to a part of the server's filesystem hierarchy, while a redirection rule is used to redirect sets of URLs to other servers.

The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
