Typing of resources

When the server returns a resource to a browser, it inserts the MIME content type of the resource in the HTTP headers (MIME is described in Section gif). For HTML documents this will be expressed as:

    Content-type: text/html

Resource types, such as images, plain text, and so on, are also indicated in this way. The typing of resources is generally configurable. Section gif describes the CERN and NCSA server configuration mechanisms.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
