Generated directory listings

Most servers can be configured to generate an HTML document that includes a formatted listing of a directory, if the URL of the request specifies a directory rather than a file or script. The format of the listings can be configured to include or exclude file sizes, the time each file was last modified and other information. The generated document may also include a README file, and often small icons (in-line images) are inserted next to each filename, as a graphical indication of the type of file. The names of the files are included as hypertext links which can be used to retrieve the files themselves. The following figure illustrates a directory listing generated by the CERN server:

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
