Serving users' documents

Both the CERN and the NCSA servers can be configured to enable documents to be served from users' directories as well as from the main Web document hierarchy. A subdirectory name is specified so that URLs with a path starting /~username/... are remapped to the subdirectory of the named user, if the user has an account on the system. This allows users at the site to have their own private Web pages without involving the Web administrator. Enabling this feature can have implications for Web security, especially if users' CGI scripts can be run (see Section gif and Chapter gif).

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
