Impact on the organization

The growth in use of the Web can rapidly absorb considerable amounts of staff time - what may start off as a small experimental service run by existing staff may soon come to be crucial to the wellbeing of an organization, eventually demanding a dedicated team, and will almost certainly require careful monitoring throughout all stages.

Managers often raise concerns about use of the Internet, and especially the Web, absorbing unlimited amounts of staff time. In practice the novelty of browsing the Web usually wears off quickly and its usefulness as a source of information far outweighs any wasted time spent Web surfing. The Web becomes just another tool to get the job done. Organizations may wish to issue guidelines or impose limits on what they consider to be reasonable in this area. Staff may also need training in the effective use of the Internet.
