The Internet is an unregulated environment, and in the same way that you probably wouldn't walk out of your house leaving the front door wide open, the connection to the Net needs to be made secure. There are a number of well-documented measures that can be taken to improve the situation. These are discussed in Chapter gif, which is devoted to security issues.

Allowing individuals to have their own Web area can inadvertently open security loopholes. Individuals may be more casual about security in their personal directories than if they are explicitly submitting documents to be centrally published.
